Barely one week after the killing of the second in command to Boko Haram leader, Momodu Bama, the joint task force, operation restore order in Borno State, has again disclosed that the dreaded leader of the Islamic sect, Malam Abubakar Shekau might have been killed in a heavy fight with military in Sambisa forest of Borno State.
A statement from the JTF spokesman, Lt Col. Sagir Musa, made available to newsmen in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital revealed that the recent video released on 13th August, 2013 by the purported sect leader as sallah massage was dramatized by an impostor to hoodwink the sect members to continue with the terrorism and to deceive undiscerning minds.
The statement said, "intelligence report available at the JTF headquarters in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital revealed that Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram sect and the most wanted terrorists with a bounty of N50 million as well as seven million US dollars over (N1 billion) might have died of gunshot wound received in an encounter with JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa forest on 30th June, 2013.
"Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into – Amitchide- a border community in Cameroun for treatment which he never recovered".
The statement added that it is generally believed that the sect leader, Shekau might have died between 25th July and 3rd August, 2013.
It further stated that he was reported to have masterminded the kidnap of seven French citizens and that of the elder stateman, Dr. Shettima Ali Monguno in addition to many murders of Islamic Clerics in northern Nigeria.
