The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "The first thing for which a person will be brought to account will be his Salah. If it is sound then he will have succeeded, be salvaged, but if it is not then he will have lost and be doomed." [Sunan An-Nasai]
Once Khalifa Haroon Rasheed wished to give a feast to the congregation of the Masjid. He told Bahlul, his aide and a learned man, "Invite all the members of the congregation (Jamaat) after the prayer."
After the Maghrib prayers, Bahlul stood outside the Masjid and asked the people from the congregation, "Which Ayaat did the Imam recite during the prayer?"
Only a few could remember what was recited during the prayer. Bahlul invited only those who remembered what the recited Ayaat were and took them to the palace.
When Khalifa Haroon Rasheed saw that only a few people had turned up for the feast, he was rather surprised. He asked Bahlul, "Were there only these many people in the congregation for the Maghrib prayers?"
Bahlul replied, "Indeed, I could only find these many people worthy of your invitation. Because only these could remember what the Imam recited in the prayer."
"…And when they stand for Salah… little do they hold Allah in remembrance." [Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 142]
